It’s no secret that poker is massively popular all over the world. There are many versions of this favourite pastime that have evolved over the years thanks to the many devoted fans. One such variation on poker is progressive poker, which gets its name in part because the openers progress. This means that the player with the highest hand opens the game. This would be an ace, king, queen, or a jack in that order.
Progressive poker players only need some friends and a normal deck of cards to play the game, though it is possible to play with only 36 cards. The standard amount of players is four but this can be increased and a full deck of cards would then be used.
One of the biggest benefits to progressive poker is that players need not risk losing money that belongs to them. Instead they can play with personal cards until they’ve used them all. It is of course possible to create a gambling atmosphere while playing progressive poker – players should ante an amount into a pot before the game begins and the winner gets the pot at the end of the game.
Progressive poker has more or less the same structure as that of Five-Card Draw. This means that each player gets 5 cards from the dealer. The player with the highest hand can open the game. If no-one can open the game, the game starts afresh.
Each player has to put one of their cards into a pot, which the winner gets at the end of the game. Lay these cards face down and flip them so that everyone can see what they are once all the players have added one of their personal cards to the hand pot.
Players can exchange cards and take an equal number of replacement cards. The player with the best hand takes the winner pile and combines it with their start cards. Repeat the process until start cards become a rare sighting. Players without start cards can’t contribute and are out of the game by default. The player who remains is the winner.
